In today’s fast-moving world, noise is an unavoidable companion. Whether it’s the relentless honking of city traffic, the hum of appliances at home, or the loud chatter in public spaces, sound pollution is all around us. Active Noise Control is an innovative technology that cancels or significantly reduces unwanted noise by creating an opposing sound wave. This process is known as destructive interference, where the noise and anti-noise waves cancel each other out.

ANC operates through several key components working in harmony:

Microphones: These tiny microphones, placed on the inside or outside of the earcups, detect the surrounding environmental noise.

Noise Cancellation Algorithm: The microphone captures the sound, which is then processed in real-time by the device’s noise-cancellation algorithm. The algorithm creates a waveform that is exactly opposite (180 degrees out of phase) to the incoming sound.

Speakers: The device emits this anti-noise waveform through the speakers. When the noise and the anti-noise signals meet, they cancel each other out, resulting in reduced noise.

Adaptive System: Most ANC systems are adaptive, meaning they adjust dynamically to the noise levels around you, providing a seamless and uninterrupted experience.

Types of Active Noise Control Systems

There are three main types of ANC systems, each with its own set of advantages:

  • Feedforward ANC: In this system, the microphones are positioned outside the earcup, capturing external noise before it reaches your ear. While effective, it can struggle to deal with high-frequency sounds, like sharp conversations.
  • Feedback ANC: The microphones are placed inside the earcup, near your ear, and pick up the noise after it passes through the earcup. This setup is better for low-frequency sounds, like the hum of a plane engine or air conditioning.
  • Hybrid ANC: A combination of both feedforward and feedback techniques, hybrid ANC is the most advanced type. It provides excellent noise reduction across a broad range of frequencies and environments.
